U.S. President Trump said on Saturday local time that he would establish a new agency focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and appoint a head of AI affairs. The move comes amid growing calls for the U.S. government to strengthen regulations and constraints on AI development. Trump posted on the social media Truth Social: "I am forming the Artificial Intelligence Task Force (AI Force), just like I created the Space Force during my first term, and the Space Force has achieved great success."
Trump also said that he is looking for a "czar" in the field of AI to be responsible for coordinating related affairs. This is the first time Trump has hinted that the federal government may strengthen supervision of the AI industry.
He once again called outside concerns about AI risks a "hoax." However, he also admitted that there are some risks in this technology and said: "We will also prevent bad behavior in the field of AI, and we can do this easily by using the existing criminal justice system and civil justice system."
Previously, Trump has been criticizing proposals to strengthen AI regulation and called criticism surrounding AI development a "sick conspiracy" aimed at destroying the AI industry.
He emphasized on Saturday: "We will never hinder or stifle the development of this incredible industry in any way. On the contrary, we will cherish it, help it, and watch and guard it as it grows."
Trump claimed that AI represents the next industrial revolution or Internet wave, and its scale and influence will be even greater, and may even account for 25% of US GDP.
As the U.S. midterm elections approach in November, AI issues are gradually receiving more attention. Public concerns about the potential for AI to displace jobs and the impact of AI data centers on local communities have sparked widespread debate.
Trump’s concern about public attitudes towards AI is also reflected in his latest social media posts. He invited supporters to participate in a self-initiated vote to discuss whether the name AI should be redefined.
Trump wrote: "For the new phenomenon of AI, a more elegant and accurate description should be 'super intelligence', 'extreme intelligence' or 'supreme intelligence'. This is a vote, and I hope everyone can participate!"
Within the AI industry, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is one of the most representative voices calling for a slowdown in cutting-edge AI research and development.
Amodei recently stated in his personal blog that the AI industry should control the pace of development of cutting-edge AI tools, and proposed a number of measures, as well as the introduction of third-party security assessment agencies.
I believe that if slowing down development can delay the time when models reach critical capability levels by a year or two, and we use that time to advance AI alignment research, we can significantly reduce the risk of serious problems," he wrote.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also warned that the rapid development of AI may lead to a "very bad" situation, and humans may even lose "control of the future."
Altman said: "We welcome the establishment of a federal-level framework to develop unified security requirements for cutting-edge AI. No matter how great the competitive pressure in the United States is, it cannot be a reason to act recklessly."
