Intel's 14th generation Core i5-14450HX laptop CPU has been revealed on Geekbench and will serve as the entry-level SKU in the Raptor Lake Refresh series. So far, we already know that at least four 14th-generation Raptor Lake-HXRefresh CPUs will be targeted at the gaming laptop segment. These CPUs are designed for gaming purposes, but can also be used for powerful productivity and content creation purposes.
The HX series is an alternative to Intel's Meteor Lake CPUs, which are mainly targeted at mainstream and low-power platforms, with only a few SKUs getting gaming enhancements. The 14th generation HX series will offer more cores and higher clock speeds, as well as more advanced cooling solutions and discrete graphics support. They don't include artificial intelligence NPUs like Meteor Lake, and even if they did, current games wouldn't benefit from such cores.
In all aspects, the Intel Core i5-14450HXCPU is a 10-core chip (6 P cores + 4 E cores) with a base clock frequency of 2.6GHz and a maximum core frequency of 4.8GHz. The chip is equipped with 20MB L3 cache and is usually paired with 16GB DDR5-5600 memory and NVIDIA GeForce RTX4050 or stronger independent GPU.
Although the 14450HX comes with an iGPU, it only has 32 execution units based on the old Xe graphics architecture. The new Xe-LPG architecture has given Intel's iGPUs a huge leap forward, but so far, Intel has no plans to bring these high-end iGPUs to its HX lineup. This may change in the future, as AMD's StrixPoint will launch high-end SKUs that support higher core counts and larger GPUs on the same chip.
Since the Intel Core i5-14450HX CPU is only 200MHz faster than the Core i5-13450HX, performance is basically the same and we can only expect a nominal 5% improvement at best. Like the 13450HX, the Core i5-14450HX will also become a popular product for mainstream laptop players, but it is unclear whether the price will have enough advantages, because AMD also has the DragonRangeHX series, and the next-generation product FireRangeHX series is also about to be launched.
