iFixit dismantling found that Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are still difficult to repair, both received only 4 points

Abstract:

After disassembling Apple’s latest Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, the repair guide website iFixit gave each a score of 4 out of 10. The Series 12 is 1 point higher than the basic Apple Watch last reviewed, while the Ultra 4 has the same score as the previous three generations of Ultra. iFixit believes that although the two watches have slight improvements, the easily damaged screen still needs to be removed for repair, and battery replacement is particularly inconvenient.

For the first time, the Series 12 uses a stretchable release strip to secure the battery. Repairers can pull the strip to remove the battery without having to pry it up from the side like the old model. Its battery energy is 1.461 watt-hours, which is higher than the 1.403 watt-hour of the 46mm Series 11. The new machine also replaces the old model’s more cumbersome display cable interface and tape with a crimped interface with a fixed bracket. However, you still have to start with the screen to enter the fuselage. The narrow disassembly space increases the risk of damaging the screen or cables; the battery must also be removed first when replacing the screen.

Ultra 4's maintenance structure remains almost unchanged. The dismantler needs to heat the screen for about 10 minutes before cutting through the edge glue layer to access the interior. The four screws on the back of the phone can only access the sensor assembly and cannot directly access the battery or main components. Disassembling the phone may also damage the waterproof seal. Its battery capacity is 2.444 watt-hours, which is slightly higher than the Ultra 3’s 2.313 watt-hours, but you still have to remove the screen to replace the battery.

iFixit also questioned Apple's approach to repair rights. Apple's current self-service repair catalog covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, monitors and some Beats products, but not Apple Watch; watch repair services are arranged by Apple or authorized service providers. Based on this, iFixit believes that in the ten states that have passed electronic product repair rights laws, including California, New York and Oregon, there may be a problem that Apple does not provide watch repair parts, tools and manuals to independent repair shops and users. This is iFixit's legal opinion and is not a violation determination made by regulatory agencies or courts. The scope and exceptions of state laws are also different.

The U.S. repair estimate for Apple reviewed by iFixit shows that the battery service for the Series 12 GPS plus cellular version is about $99, and the estimate for other damage services is about $599, which is higher than the starting price of the new aluminum version of $399; the actual cost still depends on the model, region and test results. For comparison, iFixit gave the Google Pixel Watch 5 a 9 for repairability, saying the screen can be removed with screws and washers and the battery doesn't have to be pried out of its adhesive structure.
