Microsoft Corporation announced on September 28 that Zhang Qi, Microsoft Global Senior Vice President and Dean of Microsoft (Asia) Internet Engineering Academy, will serve as Chairman of Microsoft Asia Pacific R&D Group. Wang Yongdong, the former chairman of the group, resigned from office. According to reports, Zhang Qi is one of the important leaders in the field of Microsoft products and artificial intelligence. He has profound accumulation of engineering technology, product innovation capabilities and business insights.
In his more than 20-year career at Microsoft, he has long focused on cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, and distributed computing. He has been deeply involved in the development of products and businesses such as Microsoft 365, Copilot, Windows, Office, Azure AI, Bing, and Microsoft Ads. He continues to promote the deep integration of technological innovation with products and businesses. He has extensive experience in artificial intelligence platform research and development, product innovation, technology commercialization, strategic decision-making, organization building, and talent training.
Zhang Qi joined Microsoft's US headquarters in 2002 and joined Microsoft (Asia) Internet Engineering Academy in 2010. Since then, he has led the formation of Microsoft's core teams for search advertising, big data, knowledge graphs, commercial artificial intelligence, and artificial intelligence platforms, and has collaborated extensively with Microsoft Research Asia and global R&D teams to promote the transformation of cutting-edge technologies into products and business innovations with global influence. The Microsoft Search Advertising team he founded was a key contributor to the rapid growth of Bing Ads, achieving more than $10 billion in revenue in nine years.
In recent years, Zhang Qi has further promoted the development of Microsoft's productivity platform, enterprise artificial intelligence and intelligent applications, and has played an important role in the continued evolution of key businesses such as Microsoft 365, Copilot, and Azure AI, as well as artificial intelligence-driven product innovation and transformation. In 2018, Zhang Qi was awarded Microsoft's Global Outstanding Engineer, becoming the first engineer in Microsoft's Asia-Pacific R&D Group to receive this technical expert honor. In 2021, he was promoted to Microsoft's global senior vice president; in 2024, he became president of Microsoft AI Asia Pacific; in 2026, Dr. Zhang Qi took over as the dean of Microsoft (Asia) Internet Engineering Academy.
Zhang Qi has long been concerned about the profound impact of artificial intelligence on personal abilities, organizational forms and future work methods. In 2023, he took the lead in proposing the concept of "One-Person Entrepreneur (OPE)" and published the book "OPE One Person is the System: The Single-person Entrepreneur Paradigm in the AI Era" to explore the innovation model of "Single Person + AI as Team" and provide new thinking and practice directions for the release of personal potential and organizational innovation in the AI era. Previously, he and his team compiled the book "Prompt Engineering: Methods, Techniques and Industry Applications", which systematically explored the technical principles, methods and industry practices of large language models and prompt engineering.
Zhang Qi holds more than 30 international patents and has published more than 150 academic papers. He graduated from Peking University with a bachelor's degree and received master's and doctoral degrees from Washington University in St. Louis.
