Microsoft issued a document introducing the cloud reconstruction function of Windows 11. When the computer cannot start, it can also reinstall the system online through the Internet.

📅 2026-11-05

Abstract:

After testing, Microsoft has brought a cloud reconstruction recovery function to Windows 11. This function allows users to download new system images and device drivers from Microsoft through the WinRE recovery environment to reinstall the system when a serious system problem occurs on the computer. The entire process does not require users to prepare a USB boot image in advance or borrow another computer to create a USB boot image.

What is the difference between cloud rebuilding and resetting this PC:

Windows 11’s original Reset this PC feature provides the option to keep personal files and obtain system files through cloud download. The cloud reconstruction function is for a complete reinstallation. After entering the recovery environment, download the required images and drivers from the cloud, then clear the relevant data and then reinstall the system.

Cloud reconstruction is designed for different usage scenarios: when users have backed up important data, they can directly use the cloud reconstruction function to reinstall a clean system; when a serious system failure fails to start, the system can be quickly reinstalled through cloud reconstruction and restored to use; or when the PC is to be sold, the data can be erased through cloud reconstruction to avoid data leakage (storage hardware can optionally be required to be erased during reinstallation).

WinPE can be used to export data in the event of a serious failure:

The focus of cloud reconstruction is to rebuild the system and restore the use of the PC. However, if cloud reconstruction is used when the system has a serious failure and cannot be booted, user data will also be erased. Therefore, if the user does not usually back up data, it is best to find a USB flash drive to install such as

Micro PE

Such tools can also read the hard drive and copy the important data inside in an emergency.

If your device has device encryption or Microsoft BitLocker encryption turned on by default, you need to prepare the recovery key in advance (usually the recovery key is saved in your Microsoft account, but sometimes it may not be saved, in which case the hard drive cannot be read without the key).

How to use the cloud reconstruction function:

If you can still enter the desktop:

Open Windows 11 Settings, System, Recovery, click Rebuild this PC, and then follow the prompts given by the system. Please confirm that important data has been backed up before rebuilding. Existing data on the hard drive will be erased after starting the rebuild.

If you cannot enter the desktop:

After multiple consecutive boot failures, the system will automatically enter the advanced recovery environment (or press the power button to force a shutdown after booting, and the system will automatically enter the advanced recovery environment the third time after two forced shutdowns). Select Troubleshoot in the advanced recovery environment, where you can see the cloud rebuild option.

About network connection issues:

By default, the recovery environment will reuse the WiFi credentials that have been connected to automatically connect. If you cannot connect to WiFi, you can also try to use a network cable to connect, which is a more reliable connection method. If there is no network port, you can only use WiFi. If WiFi cannot be connected, you need to use another PC to burn a USB flash drive or find a USB-RJ45 network adapter.
