Abstract:
NASA recently restarted the "Swift" gamma-ray telescope, allowing this astronomical equipment that has been in orbit for many years to continue to work. The telescope is currently approaching Earth in a slowly descending orbit, but the science team is still trying to extend its mission life as much as possible.
The "Swift" mission was originally used to observe high-energy phenomena in the universe, especially extreme celestial events such as gamma ray bursts. Although the instrument is nearing the advanced stages of its mission, NASA has chosen to resume operations in an effort to continue acquiring scientific data before it is eventually retired from service.
This restart means that researchers can continue to use it to carry out observations and data collection during the window period when the telescope can still work stably. For the astronomical community, each additional operation of this type of aging spacecraft may bring new observation opportunities and research value.
As its orbit continues to decay, Swift will inevitably eventually reenter the Earth's atmosphere and end its mission, but until then, it may continue to contribute critical data to high-energy astrophysics research.
