Abstract:
Volvo recently officially released the latest facelift plans for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its main medium and large SUV models, the XC60 and XC90. Thanks to the introduction of a new generation of high-energy-density power battery packs and optimized electronic control systems, the pure-electric cruising range of the two flagship models has improved by leaps and bounds. Not only has it set a record high for the Volvo plug-in hybrid family, but it has also directly refreshed the pure-electric cruising range record for luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs of the same level.

In this technology upgrade, Volvo engineers structurally redesigned the battery module originally arranged in the center tunnel of the chassis, significantly expanding the available capacity of the battery pack without compressing the vehicle's seating space and trunk volume. Coupled with a more energy-efficient dual-motor four-drive powertrain and energy recovery system, the new car's driving performance in pure electric mode is closer to that of a pure electric vehicle. Volvo said that the significantly improved pure electric range is enough to meet the needs of most car owners for daily commuting and urban travel in a single day, allowing the vehicle to achieve true "zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions" in daily urban use, while completely eliminating the anxiety of battery life and recharging during long-distance self-driving.
In addition to breakthroughs in core battery life indicators, Volvo has also made comprehensive optimizations for energy replenishment efficiency and driving quality. The two models after the facelift support higher-power AC slow charging, and for the first time, a faster DC fast charging protocol is introduced in the plug-in hybrid platform, which greatly reduces the waiting time for mid-way recharge. At the same time, the vehicle's built-in computer system is also deeply integrated with the battery thermal management system, which can intelligently predict power distribution based on navigation routes and automatically adjust the battery pack to the ideal charging temperature just before arriving at the charging facility.

Industry analysts point out that in a market environment where the growth rate of the high-end pure electric vehicle market is slowing down and consumers are still concerned about energy replenishment infrastructure, plug-in hybrid models with long range are once again becoming an important growth engine for the luxury car market. Volvo's technology iteration this time has pushed the pure electric range of the XC60 and XC90 to a new level.
